KUALA LUMPUR: Miracle baby Amirul Naim Azhar will be a bundle of joy to his mother Sanorfizah Saleh – but only if she can come out of her coma.

Eight-day-old Amirul Naim lies in the home of relatives in Kuala Lumpur, oblivious to his surroundings and the drama and distress surrounding his birth.

Looking at this cute, beautiful baby, it’s hard to imagine the tragedy that brought him into this world.

His 31-year-old mother, a snatch theft victim, has been in a coma since Oct 20.

On that day, doctors at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru operated on Sanorfizah, who was nine months’ pregnant, to save her baby and to remove blood clots from her brain.

She was on her way from Masai to Pasir Gudang to pick up some goods from a direct-selling stockist when two men on another motorcycle snatched her handbag. One of them also kicked her motorcycle, causing her to fall.

Her husband, Azhar Md Ali, 33, has been keeping a tight rein on his emotions since the incident.

“I have been controlling my emotions for the past eight days. I am angry and I am sad, but I have been controlling myself because everyone is depending on me,” he said yesterday.

Azhar, who implored Malaysians to pray for his wife’s recovery, hoped the police would continue doing their best to minimise snatch thefts in the country.

“I have accepted what has happened to my wife.”

He said Sanorfizah’s condition was still critical but stable, adding that doctors had given her a 50-50 chance of recovery.

“I really hope she will recover in time for Raya. Depending on her condition, if she regains consciousness, I can take our son (Amirul Naim) to visit her,” he said.

Sanorfizah and Azhar have five other sons, aged between two and 12. Three of them are with their father while two are with relatives in Tampin.

Amirul Naim has been with Azhar’s brother and his wife in Gombak since Monday. During the day, a relative babysits him while they are at work.

“The doctors say he is healthy and is okay. Dia tak banyak meragam (He is not fussy). And he only cries when he is hungry. Other times, he just sleeps,” said Amirul Naim's aunt, who wants to be known as Kak Siti.

Kak Siti, 40, who has two daughters, said she felt sorry for the baby as there was no one to take care of him.

“I think of him as my own son. He is not a burden at all.”

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Senior Asst Comm II Hashim Yusof said there had been no arrests so far.

Police are looking for two suspects involved in the case. Those with information can contact the nearest police station or the central police station at 07-223 2222.
