    When Corby found GUILTY

    [My Australasia]

    Corby jailed for 20 years

SCHAPELLE Corby will spend the next 20 years behind bars after an Indonesian court today found her guilty of drug smuggling.

Corby's legal team immediately said they would appeal the conviction and sentence, which will see Corby jailed until she is 47-years-old.

Corby was found guilty of importing 4.1kg of a Class 1 drug into Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar in October last year with judges dismissing her claims that someone else put the drugs into her boogie board bag.

Scenes of pandemonium broke out in the courtroom after the sentence was handed down with Corby's family screaming at the judge and shouting "You'll never sleep".

Corby then appeared to turn to her mother and mouth the words: "It's OK mum."

In addition to the jail term, judges also fined the Gold Coast woman 100 million rupiah ($13,870).

Outside court, Corby's financial backer, Queensland businessman Ron Bakir, said he would appeal against her conviction.

"We will appeal. We will appeal. We'll take it to the highest level," a distressed Mr Bakir told reporters.

"This is a massive injustice, what can I say. We'll get her out of there if it's the last thing we do."

Corby's Australian lawyer Robin Tampoe also said her defence would not stop.

"We won't stop. We'll never stop."

The three-judge bench said they accepted the evidence of police and customs officials that Corby admitted to owning the drugs, despite her claims she never admitted anything.

"The defendant has been proven legally and convincingly guilty," a translator quoted the judges as saying on Sky News.

"We've found that drugs were imported into Indonesia. Importation is illegal in Indonesia and it occurred at Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar. This occurred without a licence or any permit to do so. It may not be done by anyone."

"She has been unrepentant to this. It is found the defendant is responsible for the narcotics and this should be considered when handing down the judgment."

A friend of the Corby family immediately made a plea to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to release her.

Citing the help provided by Australia during the recent tsunami disaster, he said: "For a friendship to grow there must be giving from both friends.

"Mr President, we have seen enough innocent lives wasted in the last year.

"All Australia asks is that you give Schapelle back to us."

During two hours reading their 80-page finding, the judges said they were in agreement that the evidence proved Corby guilty.

They dismissed evidence from Melbourne prisoner John Ford that Corby was the innocent victim of a domestic drug-trafficking operation.

They also rejected claims of a drug ring operating among baggage handlers at Sydney airport.

Speaking after the judgment, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the Government's thoughts were with Corby and her family.

"We are not able to interfere in the legal processes of other countires," he said.

"But the Australian Government has in the past offered the assistance of two QCs ... and this will be offered again in Schapelle Corby's case."

Mr Downer also said the Government would begin official talks with the Indonesians in the next 10 days about the possibility of a prisoner transfer agreement.

He said the Government had already provided substantial financial support to Corby's defence and would continue to do so.

Who's 'locked up longer than Leong'

    [My Australasia]

Nauru kids 'locked up longer than Leong'

Some children in a key detention centre have been locked up longer than Naomi Leong, former Australian Democrats leader Andrew Bartlett says.

Senator Bartlett has just returned from the immigration detention centre on Nauru, where he said he spoke to all detainees individually and as a group.

He was commenting after the refugee advocacy group Chill Out said it believed there were 68 children in immigration detention centres around Australia and the region.

Naomi Leong, 3, was born in Sydney's Villawood detention centre on May 5, 2002, after her Malaysian mother Virginia was locked up after allegedly being caught with a false passport when she was two months pregnant.

They were released this week under bridging visas.

Their plight became public through leading psychiatrist Dr Michael Dudley who noticed Naomi exhibited disturbing behaviours including banging her head against the wall.

Senator Bartlett told ABC radio, there were six children aged two to 15 from two Afghani families in detention on Nauru.

When for no more kids detention

    [My Australasia]

Get kids out of detention: Beazley

Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley says he thinks the release of a three-year-old girl and her mother from the Villawood immigration detention centre may have been prompted by media reports on the case overseas.

Three-year-old Naomi Leong had been in detention at the Sydney centre all her life.

Her mother Virginia was detained four years ago after trying to leave Australia on a false passport.

The Leongs were released on bridging visas last night after discussions between their lawyer and the Immigration Department.

Last night's release came after news of her predicament reached the media in Malaysia, with one newspaper headline proclaiming: "Come home Virginia, and bring Naomi with you."

Mr Beazley says children should not be kept in immigration detention.

"It does look suspiciously like the Malaysian media in this instance has embarrassed the Government into doing the right thing and getting kids out of detention," he said.

"Kids don't belong in detention, full stop."

Naomi has been one of 62 children being held in detention in Australia. Until her release last night, however, she had been there the longest.

Malaysian officials had indicated the pair would be allowed to forge a life there, but that would have forced Mrs Leong to leave behind her son, who lives with his father in Sydney.

Mrs Leong's release on a bridging visa means she can now be reunited with her seven-year-old son, who is Naomi's half-brother.

The family's plight was first revealed by the ABC's Investigative Unit in a PM report on May 5.

    Detention toddler released

    By Sharon Mathieson

A THREE-year-old girl who was born in an immigration detention centre has been freed for the first time in her life tonight. Naomi Leong, who was born at Villawood detention centre in Sydney on May 5, 2002, and her Malaysian mother Virginia have been granted bridging visas to allow them to live in the community.

Ms Leong had been put in immigration detention after allegedly being caught with a false passport in 2001 when she was two months pregnant.

The Leongs' plight became public when psychiatrist Dr Michael Dudley revealed Naomi had been banging her head against a wall and was often mute and unresponsive.

    What's another battle for Kylie

    [My Australasia]

...what we call it paparazzi and media direspect.

    From NEWS.com.au

    Olivia wards off media

OLIVIA Newton-John has urged the press to leave fellow Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue alone while she battles breast cancer.

Newton-John, who shot to international fame starring opposite John Travolta in the movie Grease, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992.

She is now cancer-free and keen to raise money for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre Appeal, which wants to build a wellness centre for cancer sufferers in addition to the existing facilities at Austin Health in Melbourne.

Last night, Olivia said although she does not know Kylie well, she liked her very much and the media should respect her privacy.

"I just feel so badly for her because it's the very time you need to respect someone's privacy and leave them alone ...," she told The Footy Show on Channel Nine in Melbourne last night.

"It was a similar experience for me. I was about to go on tour (to the US) when I discovered I had cancer, so the similarities are very alike.

"The paparazzi weren't quite as crazy 13 years ago as they are now.

"But I just think that there is a time and a place for everything and this is not the time to be hanging at her house - you need to leave her alone."

Olivia said Kylie's diagnosis highlighted that breast cancer was a risk for women of all ages.

"It's a wake-up call for women that we need to self-examine on a regular basis and there is no age limit," she said.

"Early detection is key for a good diagnosis and I think a lot of women get scared to self-examine because they are scared they'll find something - but really, the obvious thing is to get into the habit from a very young age."

Newton-John appeared on The Footy Show to promote her cancer appeal and began the show singing her Grease hit You're the One that I Want, with panelist Sam Newman.

When three-year-old Naomi Leong left Villawood yesterday to attend a playgroup, she spent the morning painting in vivid colour. It was the first time she has played with children outside the detention centre.

Immigration officials have granted Naomi three hours one day a week at the playgroup to help her mental health. She has lived only inside Villawood and has begun banging her head against the wall.

Staff at Villawood Early Learning Centre said Naomi was initially happy to be there but started to miss her mother.

Shortly after 2pm, when officials arrived to collect Naomi, her mother, Virginia, bounded to the gate, eager to hear everything about her child's day. Naomi stood at the door, clutching her purple hippopotamus backpack, asking not to go back into Villawood.

"When I met her at the door, she was saying, 'No home, no home', and when we were at the gate she didn't want to come," Ms Leong, 31, told the Herald from Villawood.

"She was painting - all in colour. Painting and drawing and [she] had the playdough, but the problem is she finds it so hard to go back. It's just cruel - Now she will have to wait until the following Wednesday to be able to go again."

Virginia Leong, who was born in Malaysia, entered Australia on a valid visa but she overstayed and was detained when trying to travel to Hong Kong on a false passport. At the time, she was two months pregnant with Naomi.

Because Naomi was born in detention, she is effectively stateless and Australia will not accept her as a citizen. But while Malaysia has made it clear that Virginia can return, her child is not welcome.

Of the 74 child detainees in Australia, Naomi has been in detention longer than any of them. Numerous psychiatric reports, some dating as far back as 2003, have urged the Immigration Department to allow Naomi time with children her own age.

Apart from her day in the child-care centre yesterday, Naomi has been outside the detention centre only on two occasions: once to accompany her mother to court, and once on a two-hour trip to a farm.

"She didn't want to come out [of the centre], but she had a good day, and was very excited," Ms Leong said. "In the car on the way back all she was talking about was, 'I want a puppy dog, I want a puppy dog.'

Caveman and trolley fake rocks British museum

Staff at the British Museum have been left with red faces after discovering a hoax exhibit on display - a cave painting of a primitive man pushing a supermarket trolley.

The "rock painting", entitled Early Man Goes to Market, depicts the outline of a spear-wielding caveman pushing a trolley, next to the outline of a pig.

The work was planted by anonymous "art terrorist" Banksy, whose creation failed to raise eyebrows at one of London's most famous museums.

This is not the first time Banksy has stuck fake objects to gallery walls and waited to see how long it takes before curators notice.

Museum staff were alerted yesterday after Banksy put a message on his website, saying that the 25cm-by-15cm rock, "had remained in the collection for quite some time".

Museum staff discovered the rock, stuck to a wall with double-sided tape in a gallery of artefacts from Roman Britain.

It was placed beneath a limestone statue, a 1st Century tombstone found in Tower Hill and a case full of statuettes from Roman Britain in Gallery 49.

Banksy had placed it alongside a caption, stating: "This finely preserved example of primitive art dates from the Post-Catatonic era and is thought to depict early man venturing towards the out-of-town hunting grounds."

He added: "The artist responsible is known to have created a substantial body of work across South East of England under the moniker Banksymus Maximus but little else is known about him.

"Most art of this type has unfortunately not survived. The majority is destroyed by zealous municipal officials who fail to recognise the artistic merit and historical value of daubing on walls."

Banksy's previous stunts include a 3.5-tonne bronze spoof of the Old Bailey's statue of Justice in thigh-high PVC boots and a suspender belt.

The mystery artist has also placed a painting of a can of Tesco value tomato soup and a woman wearing a gas mask in galleries in New York.

A British Museum spokeswoman said: "We're reasonably confident that it hadn't been up for that long, maybe a couple of days.

"But we're seeing the lighter side of it.

"It looked very much in keeping with the other exhibits, the explanatory text was quite similar."

    Where's Mr Wood

    [My Australasia]

Aussie contractor, DOUGLAS Wood (pic) could be released by his Iraqi kidnappers within the next 24 hours following unconfirmed reports they are prepared to set him free.

Australia's Islamic spiritual leader Sheikh Taj Aldin Alhilali has told SBS Arabic radio he spoke for the first time with the kidnappers, who said Mr Wood could be freed in 24 hours.

The sheikh said he was told the news in a phone call from an anonymous man who said he represented the kidnappers of the Aussie contractor, taken hostage around the end of last month.

SBS radio journalist Majida Abboud-Saab said she spoke to the sheikh early today and he told her the kidnappers were prepared to release Mr Wood but not their two other Iraqi hostages.

"They said that they were willing to release Douglas Wood, however, they are not willing to release the other two Iraqis," she told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

"They are not placing any conditions on his release.

"He (Sheikh Alhilali) is very convinced and he is very optimistic and he is very happy about the fact that they have agreed to release Douglas.

"But he is very upset about the fact that the other two Iraqis are not going to be released."

It was not clear when the sheikh spoke to the alleged representative of the kidnappers.

Prime Minister John Howard expressed cautious optimism following the reports.

"We have to treat with with a bit of caution. He has reported that to our people in Baghdad," he told Southern Cross radio in Brisbane.

"We would all hope that it's right but we would also be aware in a situation like this there always people who may represent things - I don't mean the sheikh - others who may be representing to him things that are not correct."

Ms Abboud-Saab also told the Nine Network that the sheikh would now extend his stay in Iraq indefinitely instead of returning to Australia as planned this week.

She said the kidnappers had waited until now to contact the sheikh because they believed he was about to leave Iraq.

"Because they were expecting that Taj Aldin Alhilali's last day was today, they made contact today," she said.

"And the mufti's Iraqi adviser is returning to Sydney, whereas Taj Aldin Alhilali has extended his stay indefinitely in Iraq and he says he won't be leaving without Douglas Wood."

Parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs and trade Bruce Billson said the Government was trying to confirm the reports and contact Sheikh Alhilali.

"Our information is that we've seen those reports and we're having our officials try and liaise with the sheikh on the ground," he told ABC radio.

"That news is certainly encouraging although it's unconfirmed, and we're making efforts to establish the veracity of that information."

A spokesman for the Wood family said they had not had any word from the sheikh about the possibility of Mr Wood's release.

"We haven't heard anything from him," the spokesman said.

Mr Wood has been held by a rebel group, the Shura Council of the Mujahideen of Iraq, for more than two weeks, and a 72-hour deadline for Australia to pull its troops out of Iraq expired last Friday.

The last official word from the kidnappers was received a week ago on a DVD, on which Mr Wood appeared battered and bruised.

Sheikh Alhilali flew to Iraq last week in an attempt to secure Mr Wood's release, and has called on the engineer's captors to provide him with medical treatment for heart and blood pressure problems.

Mr Wood's family also began running television and newspaper ads in Iraq this week, pleading for his safe return.

    [Sci Medical & Health]

My blogs today have main objective to bring more awareness and some knowledge for the rest of us towards breast cancer. Known as a leading cause of death for women over the world [nowadays]. Breast cancer can kill silently, and percentage to survive getting lower if its not been detected earlier.

Thank God if you gal have aware with this disease... If NOT, maybe what being discovered by Ms. Kylie or what was happened to our Malaysian first lady [Datin Seri Endon Mahmood, Batiks and Songkets queen] can open your mind for not too late taking such a first move.

...but this is strictly for women on HOW to self examining their OWN breast. NOT for you mate, to examine others except for those qualified medic professionals. OK, may this will helpful and pls forward this message to other sheilas you know or to ur love one [ur mum, aunt, sis, wife etc.] - to whom you really CARE.

    Quote from WrongDiagnosis.Com

Breast cancer is one of the top five malpractice diseases. Misdiagnosis of breast cancer can occur, and the prognosis for a late discovery of breast cancer can be poor. Undiagnosed breast cancer is also often a "silent killer" because the breast pain is often a late symptom of breast cancer rather than an early symptom. Some people assume it can't be cancer without pain. And although many breast cancers arise from a discovered breast lump, not all breast lumps are discovered early.

    What's Breast Self-Examination (BSE):
Women can notice changes by use a step-by-step systematic approach and using a specific schedule to examine their breasts (breast-self examination [BSE])

Women should be aware of how their breasts normally feel and report any new breast changes to a health professional as soon as they are found.

However, feeling abnormality does not mean there is cancer.

Four simple step that may save your live:
Every woman over the age of 20 should perform a monthly breast self-examination (BSE). The best time to perform a BSE is five to seven days following your menstrual period. If your menstrual periods are irregular, perform the BSE on the same day every month. While it's important to examine your breasts regularly to detect any newly detectable irregularities, it is also important to examine your breasts carefully during all phases of you menstrual cycle, to determine what is normal for you.

Step 1: Lying on your back, place a pillow under your right shoulder. Place your right arm behind your head.

Step 2: With your left hand, feel for any lumps or irregularities in your breast. Press firmly to see how your breast feels. Move your fingers in three deliberate ways: circular, up and down vertically and in a wedge pattern.

Step 3: Repeat the exam on your left breast.

Step 4: Also, perform the BSE while in a standing position. Raise your right arm over your head or place it behind your head and examine your breast with your left hand. Examine your breast in the same three ways as in Step 2.

How Kylie breast cancer may be linked to no children

    [My Australasia][Sci Medical & Health]

Kylie Minogue may have developed breast cancer because she has not had children by her late 30s, an expert said today.

The Australian singer is 37 at the end of the month and women who don't have children or delay having them till later in life are at increased risk of the disease.

But the pop star can be reassured that she still has an 80 percent chance of surviving five years or more because the cancer has been detected in its early stages.

Dr Lesley Walker, Cancer Information Director at Cancer Research UK, said: "We know she has been diagnosed with breast cancer but that it has been caught in the early stages.

"There is now an 80 per cent survival rate of five years, but that does not mean women will not survive past that time, the vast majority of women with breast cancer survive."

Denying the superstar's gruelling world tour may have taken its toll, despite her healthy lifestyle, Dr Walker added: "People often like to blame stress, but that is the least likely cause.

"The main risk factors are a significant family history of breast cancer. The contraceptive pill and HRT also pose some risk, but that reduces when you stop taking them and the risk is only slight, and with regards to the pill, the benefits normally outweigh the risks. Heavy drinking is also a contributing factor. [More...]

  • When girls do better than boys

    [My Australasia]

    Can we accept this, boys...,

    From The Australian

By Kate Legge, Social affairs writer

GIRLS interact better than boys at a younger age than first thought and also learn to walk and talk earlier, according to a groundbreaking study that sheds new light on the development of Australian children from infancy through to school age.

Data from a new survey of 10,000 children and their families shows that girls do better than boys on social, educational and physical milestones in the very first year of life - differences that become more pronounced by the time they reach school.

The gender divide influences learning and academic competency, social and emotional skills and physical performance.

Numbers of siblings, the educational background of primary carers, early childhood learning programs, and the confidence that parents bring to raising offspring also strongly shape early childhood progress.

The first wave of data in the seven-year, $20 million longitudinal study of Australian children - coordinated by the Australian Institute of Family Studies - examines the complex array of parent and child relationships with particular emphasis on the role fathers play in family life.

The study will contribute vital empirical evidence to the international debate over how to manage gender differences in learning and development, which has intensified over the past two decades as girls continue to outperform boys in public examinations and achievement tests.

Researchers are tracking the development of 5000 babies under 12 months and 5000 four- to five-year-olds, drawing on data collected from teachers, carers and parents.

"The way that families function, including relationships among family members and parents' approaches to rearing their children has an important impact on the growing child," the report says.

Boys lead girls in every measure of disengagement and psychological disorder from attention deficit syndromes to at-risk social behaviour. The latest neuro-imaging research has identified gender differences in brain maturation, with boys slower to develop impulse control and executive planning skills.

Although boys and girls are parented in a similar fashion, levels of hostile parenting were higher for boys than girls.

The report warns that further analysis would be required to determine the cause and effect of this interaction. "A more challenging child may elicit less warmth, and hostility from parents or a colder, more hostile style of parenting could help create developmental difficulties in the child," it says.

Family size was found to influence children's performance. Infants with no siblings had the highest scores in the learning and academic competency measure while four- to five-year-olds also performed better on this scale if they were only children or had one sibling.

On the index measuring physical performance, children with more siblings scored highest, reflecting the skills associated with fighting harder for your cut of attention and food.

Having four or more siblings was associated with the lowest social and emotional score.

The study found that children reared by primary carers with a poor educational background performed worst in the learning and academic domain. Education's critical role in giving children a headstart was reinforced by the correlation between high-quality childcare and pre-school programs and higher learning scores.

Researchers found that parents' confidence in their ability flowed through to the child's social and emotional development so that confidence appears to breed confidence.

But the report cautions that parents raising a difficult child could feel less confident in assessing their skill. Low parental warmth and high parental hostility were associated with negative outcomes for children on the developmental scales.

Launching the first instalment study, the federal Minister for Family and Community Services, Kay Patterson, focused on the report's endorsement of high quality childcare and the positive attitudes of working parents towards the juggling of family and jobs.

The minister confirmed she was pressing ahead with plans for national co-ordination of childcare standards and accreditation systems.

"I have consistently said that children are better off in a household where both parents have a job," she said.

    Who next

    [My Malaysiana]

    My Mother

[Teacher]: "The Prophet Muhammad" (sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam) told us that we must obey Allah and His messenger at all times. But who else did he tell us to listen to, and be close to?

    [Children]: "My Mother!"

Who should you give your love to?
Your respect and your honour to?
Who should you pay good mind to - after Allah,
    And Rasullullah?
    Comes your Mother,
    Who next? Your Mother
    Who next? Your Mother
    And then you Father

Cause who used to hold you
And clean you and clothe you?
    Who used to feed you
    And always be with you?
When you were sick, stay up all night,
    Holding you tight?
That's right no other, your Mother

Who should you take good care of,
    Giving all your love?
Who should you think the most of - after Allah
    And Rasullullah?
    Comes your Mother,
    Who next? Your Mother
    Who next? Your Mother
    And then you Father

Cause who used to hear you
    Before you could talk?
    Who used to hold you
    Before you could walk?
And when you fell, who'd pick you up?
    Clean your cut?
No one but, your Mother, your Mother

Who should you stay right close to?
    Listen most to?
Never say no to - after Allah
    And Rasullullah?
    Comes your Mother,
    Who next? Your Mother
    Who next? Your Mother
    And then you Father

Cause who used to hug you
    And buy you new clothes?
Comb your hair and blow your nose?
And when you cried who wiped your tears?
Knows your fears? Who really cares?
    Your Mother

    Say Alhamdulillah,
    Thank you Allah
Thank You Allah for my Mother

Inspired with this very meaningful song from Yusuf Islam Friends & Children album. Enjoyed to listen with and at the same time translate it to my mother; almost every time before any News hour in RTM.

When there's nothing left to say but GOOD-BYE

    [My Malaysiana]

What a nice date today: 05-05-05 - But nothing so nice happen [to me] today.

Actually this is my last post for this week/month.

    GOOD-BYE by Air Supply

I can see the pain living in your eyes
And I know how hard you try
You deserve to have so much more
I can feel your heart and I sympathize
And I'll never criticize all you've ever meant to my life

    (Chorus)
I don't want to let you down
I don't want to lead you on
I don't want to hold you back
    From where you might belong
You would never ask me why
    My heart is so disguised
    I just can't live a lie anymore
    I would rather hurt myself
Than to ever make you cry
There's nothing left to say but good-bye
You deserve the chance at the kind of love
I'm not sure I'm worthy of
Losing you is painful to me

    How much you'll pay II

    [My Malaysiana]

    ...for your solely duit hantaran.

    From The Star

PARENTS who want to have a say in fixing wang hantaran (bridal gift) ahead of a couple's marriage could jeopardise the harmony between the newlyweds, Kosmo! reported.

Clinical sociology expert Datuk Dr Wan Halim Wan Othman said meddling parents only brought about negative results, especially if the wang hantaran was too high for the couples.

"Society has a perception that a big amount of wang hantaran reflects a better social status," he said, adding that there were also those who related it to a family's dignity, which they felt should be upheld.

Dr Wan Halim was commenting on an earlier report in the paper that said parents and in-laws were the cause of young couples getting into financial difficulty which often led to bankruptcy.

He said the bridal gift was meant to help the newlyweds to start a family.

He added that the present-day culture of holding large weddings and inviting many guests also led to wastage.

"Wedding receptions do not bring any profit and are also not money-making projects," said Dr Wan Halim, adding that a moderate reception involving close relatives was enough.

The paper also quoted Royal Prof Ungku Aziz as saying that holding big wedding receptions was a sign of arrogance or of trying to show off.

"Do it according to your means. Don't follow the rich or expect praises from guests. Keep hold of yourself and don't get into debt,"
    he advised.

Prof Ungku Aziz also frowned on using credit cards to pay for weddings, saying it was not a wise move.

On the issue of the Malay language, Berita Harian reported that non-Malays had to be responsible as well in developing and consolidating its use.

Quoting newly appointed Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) director Datuk Dr Firdaus Abdullah, the paper said the current situation indicated that Malays were solely shouldering the responsibility and were satisfied if non-Malays just took up the language.

"All this while, we have been relying only on Malays to carry out efforts to expand the Malay language," he said.

Dr Firdaus added that DBP would work with various parties on the issue and involve non-Malays as well.
