KOTA KINABALU: A 47-year-old woman was killed and her 12-year-old daughter was slashed when she put up a valiant struggle against a snatch thief.
Elizabeth Wong Oi Chin died early yesterday, about eight hours after the incident.
Doctors performed a five-hour operation yesterday to save the fingers on the right hand of her daughter Shenial Chai Vui Vern.
In the 5.30pm incident on Sunday, Vui Vern had desperately grabbed the knife from the thief to save her mother, who was stabbed three times near the Asia City complex here, only 500m away from her father’s launderette.
This latest senseless killing comes in the wake of two brutal snatch theft cases in Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur in the last 10 days.
In the Johor Baru case, a 31-year-old housewife is still fighting for her life after being pushed down from her motorcycle by two snatch thieves 12 days ago.
Doctors had to perform a Caeserian section on the nine-month pregnant Sarnofizah Saleh to deliver her baby while she was in a coma. At press time, she was still in a ventilator in the intensive care unit.
In the Kuala Lumpur incident, hawker Yong Ah Lew, 57, fell on the road while she attempted to fight off two snatch thieves in Taman Midah last Wednesday.
The single mother of two was on her way home at about 3.30pm when two men on a motorcycle grabbed her handbag, causing her to fall and hit her head on the road.
Elizabeth’s younger brother Wong Kon Fah said Shenial was taken into the surgery room at about 2.30pm.
“Shenial was crying to be allowed to meet her mother but the doctors said it was crucial for her to undergo surgery to rejoin the severed nerves in her fingers,” said Wong, who was among relatives at the hospital.
He said Elizabeth’s husband Chai Chang Fook and their three other children, Phoebe, 17, Claire, 16 and Theodor, 10, were still in shock.
“The family is still trying to come to terms with the tragedy and it comes two days before Phoebe sits for the
SPM exams,” he added.
He said his sister’s family had gone to Kuala Penyu district, about 90km south-west of here, to visit the graves of their relatives on Sunday in conjunction with All Souls Day on Tuesday.
The family returned to the capital on Sunday evening and Elizabeth dropped her husband and three of their children at the launderette in Bandaran Berjaya here.
“Elizabeth and Shenial went to the Asia City complex to buy some cakes and snacks from the Ramadan bazaar,” he said, adding that they were walking back to their car when the girl noticed a man trailing them.
She alerted her mother and they raced to their car with Shenial entering the vehicle first.
The man, said to be long-haired, grabbed Elizabeth’s handbag but she fought back.
“He whipped out a knife and stabbed her twice in the stomach and once in the chest as Shenial scrambled out of the car and grabbed the blade with her bare hands in a bid to stop the attack, screaming for help,” Wong said.
The snatch thief fled empty-handed as Elizabeth collapsed on the road while the public called the ambulance and alerted Chai.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Mangsor Ismail said the case had been classified as murder and vowed do his best to track down the killer.
Elizabeth’s funeral will be held tomorrow the St Simon chapel at Likas here before burial at Kuala Penyu.
