JOHOR BARU: Although the number of snatch theft cases has decreased by half over the past four years, the crime has resulted in the deaths of two women.
Replying to questions on the matter raised in the state assembly yesterday, Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said a total of 2,745 snatch theft cases had been recorded in 2001, 2,722 cases in 2002 and 2,031 cases last year.
Between January and October this year, he said, 1,183 snatch thefts had been recorded and the Johor Baru south district recorded the highest number of cases with 733.
“Unfortunately, two snatch theft incidents which occurred at Taman Molek and Taman Cendana this year had resulted in the deaths of their victims,” he said.
Ghani was replying to Osman Sapian (BN – Kempas), Dr Harris Salleh (BN – Sungai Abong), Jamilah Endan (BN – Kukup) and Tan Cher Puk (BN – Johor Jaya) on safety and security issues in the state.
Ghani (BN – Serom) said among the initiatives taken by the authorities to tackle the menace was to conduct special operations codenamed “Ops Python,” which showed positive results as the number of snatch theft incidents had decreased.
In his reply to Cheong Chin Liang (BN – Bukit Batu), Ghani said development in the state would continue to focus on improving the quality of life and boosting economic growth.
On flash floods, Local Government and Health Committee chairman Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique said projects to eliminate the problem could only be carried out in stages as the costs were high.
However, flash flood-prone districts were given priority, said Halimah.
She added that the Drainage and Irrigation Department had come up with a manual for development projects to help counter the problem.
