1 December is recognised internationally as World AIDS Day. This year AIDS Awareness Week will begin on 24 November 2004 and end on 30 November 2004. The aim of World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week is to raise awareness in the community about HIV/AIDS issues, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS, and the need for the development of education and prevention initiatives.

The Australian Government's World AIDS Day campaign supports the goal of the international campaign: This goal is to accelerate the global response to HIV and AIDS through a focus on women and girls by preventing new infections, promoting equal access to treatment and mitigating the impact of AIDS. This goal is in-line with the current National HIV/AIDS Strategy which aims to safeguard the health of all Australians in relation to HIV/AIDS.

Since 1988 the Australian Government and State and Territory Governments have provided joint funding to support Australia's national World AIDS Day and AIDS Awareness Week campaigns.
