SEGAMAT: An unemployed man dragged a 14-year-old girl into the bushes, allegedly raped her and when the police came upon them, he put a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.
The 27-year-old man had befriended the girl from Kampung Sedeng in Bukit Siput over a period of two months and went to her house at 11.30am yesterday to ask her to go for a walk with him.
OCPD Supt Amer Awal said the man became angry when the girl’s mother ordered her to stop seeing him as he was unemployed.
“Several villagers saw the man dragging the victim into the bushes and immediately alerted the police.
“Two policemen on a motorcycle were sent to the scene and found the man still there with the girl and wanted to apprehend him.
“At this point, the suspect whisked out a knife and held it to her throat, saying that he wanted to die together with the girl,” said Supt Amer when contacted.
Supt Amer said the two policemen persuaded the man to release the girl and promised not to hurt him.
The man released the girl and tried to escape from the policemen.
“When he could not, the man took out a penknife and slashed his own stomach,” he said, adding that the man suffered light injuries and was sent to the Segamat District Hospital after the incident.
He said police would obtain a remand order against the man today to facilitate their investigation.
