British schoolgirl wins right to wear Islamic dress

A 16-year-old schoolgirl in Britain has won her legal battle to wear a full Islamic dress in the classroom.

Shabina Begum had been sent home after she turned up at school wearing a jilbab, which covers everything, except her face and hands.

The court of appeal heard her Luton school had infringed the girls rights to express her religion, which are protected by EU human rights legislation.

Ms Begum said it was a victory for minorities throughout the country.

She described how she faced bigotry and discrimination as a Muslim after the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

The ruling means all schools in England and Wales will have to review their uniform policies to take account of religious expression.

It contrasts to the French policy of not allowing overt religious symbols or dress in state schools.
