Time's up, police tell illegals

KUALA LUMPUR: As thousands of illegal immigrants left the country yesterday, the authorities warned that those caught trying to leave after the expiry of the amnesty period will still be detained.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order deputy director Deputy Comm Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, who attended a briefing on Ops Nyah I Khas in Johor Baru, said operations to arrest and deport illegals had started.

"We are expecting such attempts (to leave the country now) by defiant immigrants and we are ready for that.

"Our Government has given them the chance and ample time to return home but when they ignore this opportunity, they are just asking for trouble," he added.
